Navratri Festival: Nine Goddess Name Importance, Aarti And Mantras
Navratri festival is one of the most revered Hindu festivals observed twice every year — once in the summer (ending with the sighting of the first crescent moon of Sharad Poonam, also known as Kartik Purnima) and once in the fall (ending with Dussehra). The word ‘Nav’ means nine and ‘ratri’ means nights.
To mark this occasion, Hindus observe a fast for nine days, keeping a vigil on the night with hymns and rituals. They begin their fast from Ashwin Shukla Dwitiya (second day of Shravan) to Kartik Shukla Dwitiya (last day of Shravan). It’s believed that fasting on these days helps in getting rid of one’s sins and negative energies.
Day 1: Maa Shailputri (Goddess Shailputri):
The name Shailputri literally means ‘daughter of mountains’. In this avatar, Durga Maa was born as the daughter of Mountain King Himalaya. Maa Shailputri represents the principal form of Durga in the childhood stage of Parvati. She sits on her white bull vahana. Maa shailputi holds Lotus in one hand and a Trishul in the other.
Mantra of Shailaputri:

वंदे वाद्द्रिछतलाभाय चंद्रार्धकृतशेखराम |

Day 2: Maa Brahmacharini ( Goddess Brahmacharini ):
Brahmacharini maa is worshipped on the second day of Navratri. As per Vedic texts, the word brahmacharini means a female who pursues sacred religious knowledge. In this avatar, she holds a kamandalu in one hand and Rudraksha mala in the other. In this avatar, Maa Brahmcharini represents the ascetic phase of Durga.

दधाना करपद्माभ्यामक्षमालाकमण्डलू।

Day 3: Maa Chandraghanta ( Goddess Chandraghanta ):
Devi chandraghanti is worshipped on the third day of Navratri. The meaning of name Chandra-Ghanta is “one who has a half-moon shaped like a bell”. In this avatar she is mounted upon a fierce tiger. Maa Durga has 10 hands in this avatar. Out of which eight hands are armed with Trishul, Arrow, Dhanush, Gada, Sword, Kamandal, a Lotus flower, and Japa mala. Her fifth right-hand makes the Abhaya Mudra and Her fifth left hand is in Varada Mudra. This avatar represents the ‘Shakti’ form of Maa Durga.

Day 4: Devi Kushmanda ( Goddess Kushmanda ):
Devi Kushmanda is worshipped on 4th day of Navratri. This avatar is a represeents Durga as ‘Mahashakti’. The meaning of Kushmanda’s name is ‘creator of the universe’. In this avatar, she is mounted on a lion, having eight arms. In her arms, she holds a dhanush, bada, kamal, an amrit-kalash, kamandal, japa mala, gada, and chakra respectively. She blesses all her devotees from her abhayamudra hand.

Day 5: Devi Skandmata ( Goddess Skandmata ):
The fifth day of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Skandmata. She is the goddess of motherhood. In this avatar, she is mounted upon the back of a lion. She has four arms. One hand is in the fear-dispelling abhaymudra position blessings her devotees and with her second hand, she holds the infant form of her son Skanda on her lap. Goddess holds lotus flowers in her other two hands.
Devi Skandmata Mantra:
ॐ देवी स्कन्दमातायै नम:
Oṃ Devī Skandamātāyai Namaḥ
सिंहासनगता नित्यं पद्माञ्चित करद्वया।
शुभदास्तु सदा देवी स्कन्दमाता यशस्विनी॥

Day 6: Maa Katyayani ( Goddess Katyayani ):
Goddess Katayani is worshipped on sixth day of Navratri. In this avatar, the goddess is mounted on a fearsome lion. She has four arms on which she holds a sword, trident, shield, and lotus in each hand. She represents a goddess of power.

चंद्रहासोज्जवलकरा शार्दूलवरवाहना।

Day 7: Devi Kaalratri ( Goddess Kaalratri ):
The seventh day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess kaalratri. She is the devi of auspiciousness and courage. The meaning of Kaalratri name is auspicious or doing good in Sanskrit. She makes her devotees fearless. She is mounted on a donkey and has got three bloodshot eyes and unkempt hair. Kaalratri Goddess wears a garland of skulls around her neck. She holds a trident, a bowl, scimitar, and a vajra in her four hands. She is also worshipped as ‘Kali’.

Goddess Kaalratri Dhyan Mantra:
करालवंदना धोरां मुक्तकेशी चतुर्भुजाम्।

Day 8: Devi Mahagauri ( Goddess Mahagauri ):
The eighth day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Mahagauri. This day is celebrated as ashtmi. On this day mahagauri is worshipped as the goddess of beauty and women. She mounted upon a white bull and holds a trident, a pink lotus, and a damru in three hands, and with her fourth hand she gives blessing and fulfil all desires of her devotees.
Goddess Mahagauri Mantra:
ॐ देवी महागौर्यै नमः॥
Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah॥
श्वेते वृषे समारुढा श्वेताम्बरधरा शुचिः।
महागौरी शुभं दघान्महादेवप्रमोददा॥
Day 9: Maa Siddhidhatri ( Goddess Siddhidhatri ):
The final day of Navratri is celebrated as Navmi and this day is dedicated to the goddess of siddhis. She is the moola roop of Goddess Parvati. As her name depicts, she is goddess of supernatural powers or sidhis. In this avatar, she has mounted on a fully bloomed lotus or lion and holds a discus, mace, conch shell, and lotus in her four arms.
Goddess Siddhidhatri Mantra:
सिद्धगन्धर्वयक्षाघैरसुरैरमरैरपि।
सेव्यमाना सदा भूयात् सिद्धिदा सिद्धिदायिनी॥
वन्दे वांछित मनोरथार्थ चन्द्रार्घकृत शेखराम्।
